I am a Preschool teacher and a Grandmother of a 20 month old little girl . She loves to play dressup, water play is good, she loves blocks, cars, Little Tykes cars, playdo can easily go into mouths so alot of supervision is needed, dishes and make believe toys are good(big enough not to fit in the mouth), beginning puzzles, outdoor play with lots of supervision is great. At this age TV shouldn't really be an option, unless you are watching something like Baby Einstein with them. If your child is like my Granddaughter, then climbing toys are great too. Music to dance to is another fun activity. Have fun playing with your child.

Good for you, kids watch far too much tv. I'd suggest limiting it to 30 minutes a day.

Go to the park. Read some books together. Do puzzles. Art and colouring.

At that age, children can do nearly anything.

There are many sites but here is one:

There is probably an early childhood teacher in your area too, that has a handout, check with you local school.

Another source is easterseals, they have a website so you can find a place near you:

I love the mystery box. Put items in a box a cut a hole in the side. If you child can talk a little have them tell you what's in it. If they can't ask for an item from the box. No peaking. Laugh alot!

I raised 3 kids, 1 while I worked full time outside the home and 2 while I worked my own business from home. A 20 month old needs stimulation and excitement and a feeling of "I can do it!" as they approach the terrible twos. Get her easy jigsaw puzzles, flash cards, crayons and blank paper, playdough, and books that you touch- like "Pet the bunny". If she persists in the tv, pop in educational videos- ABC's, Colors, etc.
Dolls with doll clothes are good- large dolls with large items that she can't swallow. Baby buggy for her doll, cradle, etc.

There are serveral other activities you can do: Read to her, Play a game (Candyland) with her, take her to the park, take her to the beach, get the ColorWonder art supplies from Wal-Mart and let her draw and paint, bake cookies wth her, let her "help" you in the house or yard, put her in a kiddie pool with a water hose and let her play. Of course, ALWAYS supervise her when she's doing these things.

Its great to see that you don't sustitute good parenting with the TV. Try coloring, books, singing songs to her, counting things she can see. My son loves to do things that cause him to move. I can keep him entertained by singing the hokie pokie or if you're happy and you know it. Books are his all time favorite. My Little Touch Leap Pad is for younger kids. My son loves it. It sings; talks; teaches numbers, colors, shapes and etc..; and lots of other things. He spends the longest periods of time with his attention on his "Little Touch Leap Pad". They are about $25-30 and each book is from $6-12. They are great learning tool and apparently they are fun to play with.

Sand box, blocks, Lego's, ball pits, books and marble sets (with adult supervision) is what my children love/loved the most. There are many things that can be done without a TV. And these are things they will play with for many years. Mine are 8,6,5,23 mo. and 10 months.
