GMT is green wich meridien time. There's a place in U.k. with the same name. Actually, GMT is a longitude at 0 degree. This helps in finding out the time zone of any place on Earth.
For example, X is a place which is five and a half hours ahead of GMT (refer to any GMT map). This simply means that if you know the current time of X place, then you may either add or subtract the above mentioned gap depending upon which side of GMT does the place lie. If it lies east to GMT then subtract and vice versa. similarly you can find the time of different places taking GMT as a base.

GMT is the base line for all time zones. Therefore all time zones are plus or minus GMT. All you need to know therefore is whether your time zone is plus or minus GMT and by how many hours. The difference will be constant.
