What kinds of colors do you like? You definitely want colors that you think you can live with for a long time. In my last house I used warm yellows throughout my house with slightly darker tones in my study and my dining room. I fauxed finished several walls (using a rag-off approach). In my current house it also has warm yellows throughout the downstairs and will shortly have warm oranges and browns upstairs. Our furniture is not contemporary - it's very sturdy medium colored wood that was imported from Mexico (we live in Texas, so it's very inexpensive). We are somewhat going for a hacienda feel.

I would stay away from wallpaper at all costs. It's very difficult to get off if you change your mind in a few years.

Either tile or stone would work well in the bathroom, I think. It just depends what kind of look you want and what you can afford.

I think it's always best to use neutral colors on the walls and floors and then you can add splashes of strong color throughout the room with accessories. Then you can change your accessories when you get tired of a certain style.

Fireplace in the kitchen with somewhere to sit and chat.
Washer and dryer near the bedrooms.
Secret passageways.
Huge closets.
Bathroom that is entirely submersible.
Shower for two (i.e. a showerhead at both ends).
Have a fridge outside where you will entertain.
Build a summer room separate from the house, like a free standing screen porch or something, also with a fireplace.
Shoe racks.
Stone paths to the front door and through the yard.
All brick - it never goes outta still and never wears.
Have a small formal living room and a separate family room or home theater.
Install a central control unit to control all the lights, alarms, volume, etc.
Stereo system that does throughout the house.
Have every room wired for everything known to man.

That's all I can think of right now.

Master bath, off set the sink so that it is not centered on the counter, that way you have more space to put stuff. Don't do double sinks, that's stupid, don't start his/hers that way.

Master show, 3 shower heads, one normal, one from the ceiling and the other waist height. Big glass blocks it let more light into the shower and so your spouse can watch you shower (sexy).

Wire the house so that there is phone, CATV and computer network cable into every room even the bath rooms. Put a phone in the bath room, you know people call you when your in there ;). then you might also at some point in time put a flat panel TV in the bath so you can watch TV while you are in your jacuzzi.

Central A/C, hopefully you will get this. Especially one with a filter so that it will take out the dust in the rooms, it's very efficient, especially when someone has asthma.

I think if you have more than one bathroom you could use stone in one and tile in the other. How exciting that you are having your dream home built!!! I am getting ready to redo my kitchen. I'm torn on the color also. I want to go with something bright. I'm thinking that I will do a cream and then go with all different colored accents (orange, red, yellow, blue, and green), maybe a Contemporary theme. In the bathroom, I would go with earth tones if you a stone floor. My parents just remodeled their bath in white with light blue accents and lighthouses. It's very pretty.

I have been remodeling my house for a year now... I one bathroom in Navy and canary Yellow...Using using blue stone tiles and the sinks that look like bowls...Very nice looking...my kids bathroom I did black and red....Red tub, toliet and sinks. Black tile with red grout. It is super cool. My kitchen I did in a moss green with tile backsplash and huge island with the range on it and stainless steel appliances. Living room I have yet to tackle.

You might want a dramatic focal point in your bathroom or kitchen
A Tuscan landscape transferred onto ceramic or tumbled marble tiles would be incredible... Check out my website

You obviously will have your own color preferences. I would suggest that if you are building a 2 story that you have a laundry shoot built in.
