They do. My four chihuahua's all use a dog litter box. It's made by purina & called second nature & is designed for dogs, it's low in the front so they can get in & out. Don't use cat litter though, they can try to eat it & it's not good for them. I use plain newspaper & spread it out on the bottom of the pan & then just roll it up & throw it away. I live in New England & my dogs don't like going out when it's cold so it's easier. Also I can be gone all day & not have to worry about getting home to let them out to potty. I have cats also & I would rather clean out the dog boxes then the litter boxes any day.

They can, but remember that a "litter box" trained dog will have big issues if take the dog any place else.
A friends for the weekend, the vet's for an overnight something or other, a kennel if you go on a vacation, at a hotel if you take your dog with you on vacation. Do you really want a litter box in your car with you?

It can be done, and it seems like it would be easier - but only in the short run.
In the long run.....I wonder........

Because of how they're wired. Wild cats generally bury their scat in sand or dirt so other, stronger predators can't find them and hunt them down from their trail. Dogs however are social creatures and alpha predators, so their scat is used as a way of marking territory and telling in what kind of health other dogs are. They don't need to hide their scat. When we give cats a litter box we are simply encouraging a behaviour they would do naturally, however dogs have no such impulse so training them would be more complicated.

No reason why not if you have a small toy breed dog, you could train it from a puppy to go, but larger breeds of dog, that wouldn't be feasible because of the amount of litter you would have to buy, or the size of the box would have to be huge. You'd spend a fortune.

It isn't natural for dogs to use a litter box but they do make special litter for them and they just need to be trained to use it.

It would be difficult for a male dog to use a litter box.

They do make dog litter boxes. It is probably easier to train a female dog to use one. I have a chihuahua and I have trained her to use the puppy training paper. Now that she is trained she never goes anywhere else in the house.

Cats use a litterbox because they dig holes to do their business and then cover it up. Dogs go anywhere and then "mark" the spot with deep scratches, this would send litter everywhere! Also if you were to see the size of my dogs you wouldn't bother with this question, I would have to use the bathtub. lol

they can if you teach them to but the litter is different. Stop by your local pet store.

Also, it is common for dogs to use such litter boxes for dogs that are under 5 lbs.
