The hooded ones are fine, but 2 rec's here: Make sure you get one of those with a little window on top to place a filter pad; and clean it more frequently than usual because it will keep the smells more contained & at the same time stronger.
Going by my cat, your tom may not be kicking out litter for the fun of it, but trying to clean the grains from its feet . A little mat up front will work wonders & also keep the mess more contained. There are some plastic & deep to hold grains, but you want something that will feel good on his poor toes. An old towel or piece of carpet will work better, even if you have to wash it once in a while.

A litter box with a lid is fine so long as you remember to scoop it out every day and change the litter completely often enough. Some cats won't use them because they contain the smell, but mine will if I keep it clean for her. There are also some products out there that catch litter if he throws it out the front of the litter box. There are plastic mats and grids that you put on the floor in front of the litter box opening so the litter falls in them and gets stuck rather than rolling all over the house. Those work pretty well. You could also try a top-entry litter box since your cat is still young. It looks like a big plastic tub with a lid that has a hole in it. I haven't tried this but I think I will see if she'll use it.

My cat has a hooded litter box and he still gets it all over the floor. Sometimes he just goes crazy in there! But a hooded box would cut down on the mess.

A hooded litter box is a good idea. You may want to look for a hooded litterbox with a deep pan. If he still kicks the litter out, try using a little less litter.

Even with the hooded one they can still do it, my cat is almost 13 and has always kicked some out the front of his hooded litter box, we just started putting an old towel in front of it for quick clean up instead of it getting everywhere.

You should get the largest hooded box you can find, and offer it along with your current box for a couple weeks. You don't want to mess up your kitties good potty habits by changing the arrangement too quickly. It looks kinda cheap, but storage bins with tall sides and a low entranceway works well if your cat prefers and uncovered box. Ammonia and litter perfume builds up quickly in a covered box, so just make sure to stick your head in it once a day to sniff test it. Make sure nobody is watching, first tho!

A hooded litter box would be great, the reason he kicks litter out is because he is covering up his droppings

Trying a hooded box certainly wont hurt but you may have to just accept the fact that your little kitty is a slob. I have an older senior cat, a middle aged cat and a kitten. All of them kick their litter out. I think they do it on purpose because they know it drives me nuts! And I don't know about you but everytime I change the box they are inside within minutes to dirty it up. It's almost like a game for them! Hahahaha! Just like with people, if we love our kitties we have to accept their bad habits. Best of luck to you!

Yes. If he is also tracking litter outside of his box, place a hooded litterbox on a course mat. This should prevent your cat from tracking litter about the rest of your home.

A hooded box works just fine. There are pads also you can put down infront of the box that cuts down on the litter that gets stuck in their paws.
