For alot of reasons.

1) the person who bought it, loves it that much
2) Historical and social relevance is important, and painting is one way in which this is caught for all time by someone of that age.
3) It is the perfect application of the art form. In other words, it is so good, it can't be beat in its beauty.

They are three of the best reasons for buying any art work. Art is something that crosses languages, cultures and time. It is the only form that allows for someone to portray their ideals that other people can look at and understand without words. Beyond that, nothing is more important than beauty to some people... and the visual arts are a way to capture that beauty.

Wouldn't you pay 68 million for a painting you thought you could sell for 80 million? That's what these people are thinking.

I have no idea. I'll take a pin up girl over the most expensive art in the world.

Something to do with who it was.
Like once the painter becomes like a guy in art textbooks and is a household name then value goes up.

because it can be. why can hollister sell me 100 dollar jeans that cost less than half that to produce? it's the way the world works, i guess, and while it may seem insane, well, people are insane.

this reminds me, i was reading in an old newsweek, some guy paid $100,000 for the plaid shirts worn in brokeback mountain. that made me chuckle. =)

I have asked myself this same question many times...also why would someone pay $4000 for a pair of shoes....If you have that much extra money, I'll take some. I got 3 boys that need to go to college!

dan's absolutely correct...something is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it...
for some reason people are willing to pay for brands also...like $5 for a Starbucks drink (when the coffee isn't quality...people just think they like it because they haven't been introduced to what quality coffee is supposed to taste like)
like people paying $100 for hollister jeans (when they know they're going to fall apart after a couple months)

because it's done by a great artist and can likely can be resold at a higher value later.

it may be extremely rare and in excellent condition.

people of great wealth like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have to spend it on something and great art does appreciate in value and is entirely unique.

owning great art can be a class symbol and visitors to your home will hold you in great regard.

They just want to show that they can buy it without it touching them or their money reserves.

Because that's what people are willing to pay for it.
