You would need to obtain a visa in many cases, unless the island is a US territory. Most of the time, you'd have a visitor's visa which would only be good for a limited time. If you're meaning to stay permanently, you'd have to check with the island's government authorities.

WHEN YOU CRUISE TO AN ISLAND FOR THE DAY. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS YOUR CRUISE I.D.(SAIL AND SIGN CARD) NEVER EVER LEAVE THE SHIP WITHOUT IT. THE CARD IS YOUR TICKET BACK ON TO THE DOCKS AND IN THE SHIP.
WITH OUT IT YOU WON'T MAKE IT ON THE DOCK. NEVER MIND THE SHIP.YOU'VE BEEN FOR WARNED.
ALSO BE BACK ON THE SHIP AT LEAST A HALF HOUR BEFORE YOU SET SAIL AGAIN TO ANOTHER ISLAND, OR YOU'LL BE LEFT BEHIND.
YES, YOU CAN STAY THE WHOLE DAY AS WELL.
HAVE FUN CRUISING!!!!
WHEN THEY SAY THE SHIP LEAVES AT LET'S SAY 5:OO PM THAT SHIP LEAVES AT 5:01 PM NO JOKE

No you cannot it will through off the actual embarkment headcount. the best thing to do if interested spending time at a particular island would be for you to fly in on a plane booking it under a all inclusive flight package.go to hotwire.com/airtran.com/jetblue.com for great caribbean flight package rates.

you might encounter problems with the local authorities without documnetation that you have business being in that country. of course you don't have to return to the cruise ship. they will leave you behind and never worry about how you get back.

technically yes...as long as your papers are in order (if you need any) and you are prepared to pay your own way back if you ever decide to return "home"
but you need to let the authorities know what you are doing so they don't spend a fortune looking for you
