I saw this riddle a week ago or so and I cannot figure it out for the life of me!! Some one who knows, please tell me!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

One day a man was getting executed. The exacutioner couldn't decide how to kill the man so he told him this : "Tell me one statement. If it's the truth, you will be shot. If it's a lie, you will be hanged."
Without hesitation the man being executed stated : "Today, I will be hanged."
How will the man be executed?

----------------------------------------------------------------

Confusing isn't it? But if someone has the answer, please let me know!!

the man is a very wise man. h e would be freed of the charges or the executioner would have to choose another method of executing him. cuz if he wanted to hang him it would be a true statement, so he'll have to shoot him, but if he came to shoot him it will become a false statement, then he'll have to hang him, and the circle goes on and on. the executor must pull back his word. o r he will be shot then hanged:p

The answer to this old riddle is that he wont be executed. If he is hanged then he was telling the truth and cant be hanged and he cant be shot because he was telling the truth about being hanged and the question wasnt a choice was it.

Hang him the next day.

He said "Today, I will be hanged." If the executioner doesn't hang him that day, then the man was lying and he would get to hang him (the next day).

You can always hang and shoot him too. That way it will be a truth that he will be hanged, and thus should be shot.

To the person who is "looking for the correct answer": The answer isn't going to be fair (you have to "bend" the rules, but don't break them). The prisoner didn't want to die and tried to come up with a way to live, thus you need to out smart the prisoner. Many people have come up with answers, if you don't like them, keep scratching your head; you aren't going to find anything to satisfy you.

By stating, "Today, I will be hanged", the man being executed forces the executioner to not execute him.
If his statement is a lie, he will be hanged, making the statement a truth, meaning he will be shot, meaning the statement is a lie, so he will be hanged... etc.

There is no definite "answer".

He will get shot. The riddle says if he tells a lie he will get shot. So if he gets shot then what he said ' today i will be hanged' is a lie. See how it all works out?

I think he won't be executed today because:
If he were hanged it would make the prisoner's statement a truth, making the executioner a liar..
If he was shot it would make the prisoner a liar also making the executor a liar.

He will be hanged and shot. It's the truth, but he'll get shot for that, so he'd lie, so he's shot and hanged.

i would say it is both a lie and the truth, a lie because he doesnt completly know, and the truth because if he lies he is hanged.
