The same reason many people can't. Lactose Intolerance.

Dogs can't eat dairy products? Why would they make cheese treats for dogs if they couldn't have dairy products? I think as with all things, dairy products are okay in moderation. You shouldn't solely feed dairy products, might stop up the plumbing!

Most dairy products are digested poorly by dogs who have little or none of the enzyme required to digest the lactose in milk. Just like lactose-intolerant people, lactose-intolerant dogs can develop excessive intestinal gas (flatulence) and may have foul-smelling diarrhea. It is best to avoid most dairy products altogether, although small amounts of cheese or plain yogurt are tolerated by most dogs, since these products have less lactose than most.

Dogs are lactose intolerant, they lack the proper amount of an enzyme called lactase which is required to break down the lactate in dairy products.

For many dogs, dairy is tough to digest. Their tummies lack certain enzymes that we humans have. And even some of us have a tough time with dairy.

Dogs can eat dairy but...like people they (and cats too) can become lactose intolerant.
Whatever you do, don't ever feed your dog chocolate though. It is poisonous to dogs.
A good (usually hard variety) commercial dog food and plain (clean, fresh) water is enough to give your dog its nutritional needs. :)

Dogs can eat dairy. Just in moderation, you give them too much and it's bad for them plus it will most likely give them diarrhea, and upset their stomach. Don't give them milk or anything, but a little cheese and yogurt are something my dogs LOVE and it's always a nice little treat. Whenever I eat cheese and crackers I always throw them a little piece...they love cheese.

Their stomachs arent made to digest dairy- the acid cant handle it. They can eat it, but they wont feel very good.

I think it's a myth. Most dogs are probably lactose intolerant, but mine eats ice cream and occasionally a small piece of cheese and she's fine. I also had friends who gave their dog milk when she was sick and it made her feel better.

They are lactose intolerant. Some dogs can eat a little cheese but not too much or too often.

They eat it as puppies!!! They may, like humans, develop lactose intolerance as adults. Want to give your lactose intolerant dog ice cream? Put a Lactaid tablet in with it.
