she uses the same ingredients that the grocery store does today... is sentimentality an ingredient not listed on the package?

The truth is that a major part of our tasting ability actually comes from our sense of smell. Before you ate your grandma's cookies you usually would smell them baking. That smell would activate your taste buds and wha la. Store bought cookies have half the flavor because you can't smell them anymore. By the time you get them home they are stale. YUK.

Sentimentality probably had a lot to do with it, but even more importantly, Grandma didn't use all the additives that go in cookies today. Check the list of ingredients on the package and you'll find stuff that Grandma never had in her cupboard -- and possibly never heard of!

Sentimentality and love are definitely delicious ingredients.

If you were lucky enough to get Grandma's cookies shortly after they came out of the oven, freshness was also included. That's one of the reasons that Mrs. Field's cookies are so good - the ingredients and the fact that they are fresh from the oven.

Well possibly because grandma's cookies were fresh, and grocery store cookies are mass produced and packaged and packed with ingrediants such as anti-caking agents and such to prolong shelf life.

Because grandma makes hers from love,
the grocery store makes theirs for a pay check!

money smells better, but love always taste better!

Grandma's cookies had real sugar, real butter, and LOTS and LOTS of love. There were no short cuts, cut backs, or holds barred when it came time to make cookies!

Thanks for asking this question; I think it is time for me to pull out an old cookie receipe and fire up the oven!! :)
