yeah, we know you wanna know. obviously, otherwise you wouldn't have posted the question. anyway, I suggest trying your animal shelter. you can often get really nice dogs there and you'll rescue one that needs it. you don't need a purebred dog to have a good one. and if you really like a certain breed, they are in shelters to. try www.petfinder.com. anyway, besides the shelter thing, I kinda like corgis. some labs are small, they're everywhere. so... whatever you take a fancy to. please try the animal shelter thing!

Speaking from experience :)

A miniature poodle would be my first choice. They are very smart so they are easy to train. A real joy to be around, very friendly and a good medium size dog (avg 15" and 20 lbs).
Unlike border collies and jack russels they don't need much exercise, they are happy with only 1 walk a day (and if like my dog, if its rainy he's quite happy to just stay inside do some training and play catch down the hallway) Don't forget that mental training can count as a walk as well, plus there is nothing worse than a untrained out of control dog. My dog goes everywhere with me and we always get comments about how well behaved he is. The only downside of a poodle is the grooming, as their hair continually grows it needs to be clipped approx every 6 weeks. Take a course through continuing education or get some books from the library and teach yourself. Buy some good clippers ($200) and do it yourself, it will be enjoyable, another bonding experience and save you lots of $.

You don't want a little "yippee" dog that barks at everything.
A beagle or Cavalier is a good choice. It also depends if you have kids.
The best all-around dog (temperament-wise), is a Golden Retriever. But they need lots of excercise to be happy. And they don't bark much.
If you have a large yard so you can go out and play with it and exercise it, then I'd go with the Golden. The females are usually smaller than the males.
Above all, go to a shelter to get a dog and make sure you are a responsible pet owener by spaying or neutering.

Try an Airedale Terrier. They have curly hair that doesn't need a lot of attention. They are happy and playful. Or, a Westhighland Terrier or Scottish Terrier; both are the same except that the Westie is white and the Scottie is black. My personal favorite is a long-haired daschund. They're happy little fellows, eager to please. If you consider buying a Daschund, be sure to fix any holes in your fence or under your porch. In German, 'daschund' means badger dog, so they like to try to dig. A sandbox is a great idea for Daschunds.

Consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. Females tend to be medium sized, they are a low energy, low shedding breed who are very friendly with humans of all sizes. They have wonderful personalities and make great family pets. For more information check out http://www.greyhoundpets.org

Rat Terrier. Great dog! Teddy Roosevelt had them in the White House.

I'd go for one in the 30-60 lb zone, like Lab/Retrievers, Standard Poodles, or maybe a beagle or something. I'd start off looking at the pound/animal shelter, see what they have/reccomend, and go from there. Good Luck.

Border Collie
Almost any type of Terrier
Some types of Setters
But if you have a big backyard and lots of running room, I personally suggest a Border Collie.

Get a rescue beagle. Beagles are great dogs for people with fenced yards. Great with kids and families.

Border Collie, smart and easy to train. Plus he would love the big yard.
