It could be, it certainly is a big step.

Such a reunification is impossible until such time as the fallible human beings running these churches are willing to admit they've all been wrong from the beginning, and never should have split. More than that, they will have to both come to a complete agreement on all theological and doctrinal points, and voluntarily give up the power, prestige and privilege they now enjoy as sole and supreme voice of God. Figure the odds! It should also be remembered that so-called Militant Islam is no more united than the the Christians, the most casual attention to the news from Iraq will make it clear they're killing each other as happily as they do anyone else. Humans being human there will always be the misguided and the fanatical, that is the price of Free Will.

All people, including Muslims, should unite against militant Islam.

All loving, caring people should unite to make the world a better place. That includes trying to understand why militant Islam exists, and choosing the best way to respond to the anger and fear many Muslims are dealing with in The Middle East today.

Islam is not something to unite against. A true following of the teachings of Islam (or Christianity or Judaism for that matter) should be what we hope for.

Besides, the last time Christians united against militant Islam was during The Crusades. I'm not sure a united Christianity (which will never happen) will bring about the results you desire.

Probably not. We have to remember that the Catholic Church through scripture and tradition expressly warns us about seeking a political and temporal solution to our problems. That is what Islam is, a temporal and political attempt to create utopia through Islamic law and submission to Allah spread throughout the whole world. Christians are to seek the Kingdom that is yet to come.

As far as Europe goes, it is important for the Orthodox to end their schism and return as Churches to the Universal Church. Liberal secularism is a far bigger poison than Islam. Population wise and society wise, I think we have passed the tipping point in Europe and society there will be Islamified during our lifetimes (just like in the US it will become more Latin American). It is a numbers game really, Europe and American have aborted millions and millions of children and will become self-made minority cultures. The Orthodox suffered terribly under communism in addition to the abortion effect.

I foresee an Ecumenical Council in 100-150 years which will unite the Orthodox and the Roman Catholics and Eastern Rite Catholics. Several of the Orthodox Churches are ready now from the point of view of their hierarchy (and Rome is more than ready), to begin very rudimentary overtures for union, but the people in the pews wouldn't stand for it.

Protestantism, is in the process of fissuring into a Liberal Socialist groups that are not very Christian (like the ECUSA and PCUSA), Conservative "Orthodox" Groups that are slowly moving towards Rome, and a completely new type of religion that is completely ahistorical extremely charismatic and opposed to any sort of reason and philosophy (mainly this is coming out of the Pentecostals in Africa). Protestantism is hard to keep a finger on because it is not static and there is a major theological shift ever 30-50 years. I do not know what will happen.

Christian unity is important and it will be important in this century as the global power shifts from the West to the East. Everyone is so focused on the Middle East that they forget about India and China. Christian unity is important, but it is not essential. The Church is a lighthouse and a citadel. She will survive whatever storm, and will provide safety for all that enter in.

Turn the tide against Islam - another crusade? You would likely start world war three.

KEEP RELIGION OUT OF POLITICS!!!!!

Everyone should be free to worship who and what they want. Anyone who thinks they should not is a dictator and is certainly acting against the teachings of the Christian faith and most others and you talk of militant Islam!!!

The protestant group of churches is loosing it's congregation fast. Cof E and others ahve been alking of uniting simply to unite congregations so there are enough for services.

Any religion which seeks to dictate to other religions and non believers should be banned by law.

Not only is that the most absurd thing I've ever heard, it is also the most unlikely. Militant Islam is not a result of Christianity, it is a result of people using some common trait among a group of people to abuse and gain power... see: demagogues.

No. The most important movement is to bring those who are not Christians to Christ.

Each denomination is mainly based on minor differences in worship styles and certain interpretation of the scriptures (i.e. speaking in tounges). Unification would only dilute the faith of the people.

Oh and the one world religion is not supposed to take shape till half way through the tribulation, and I for one hope not to be there.

This will never happen, because there are many differences between Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant church.

I'm inclined to be more worried about global warming and more excited about advances in genetics and their use in the eradication of diseases myself.

But maybe I've just got the wrong perspective here...

Why are Christians so hell-bent on turning everyone? You are entitled to your beliefs, and so is everyone else.
