I watched this show about celebrities and how they blow their cash. Bono spent $12,000 to have his favorite hat flown to him while he was on tour. How many people could that have fed? Bono and other Celebrities could take a huge pay cut and all that money could go to feed and house the people. Not even worried about the churches yet. Let's stop paying such high prices to Athletes, Musicians, and Actors. Then we can worry about churches.

Many people are confused about how much the Catholic Church actually owns. It isn't nearly as much as people would like to think, but that really isn't the answer to your question.

I read Bono's question and the first couple of pages of answers.

If we, as a people, are to rid the world of poverty then those in poverty need to start to help themselves. I recently watched a news bit where a group of people went into a "poor" neighborhood to clean up the park so the kids there have a place to play.

These people, mostly white - middle class, arrived at 8:00am and started to pick up booze bottles, beer cans, used condoms, and God knows what else. Where were the residence of the area? Sitting on the porch watching. One person had the gaul to tell the news crew "Its about time someone came out here to clean up, these childrens aint gots no place to play." My thought was, "Why don't you get off your rear and clean up yourselves?" I mean, it's your neighborhood, right?

This womans comments, unfortunately, have become the norm for many people around the world. . . "Why should I do anything when I can let someone else do it?" Once that mentality is changed, then we have a chance to end poverty and starvation.

I would also like to bring up the mentality that we (specifically the US) should help every nation in the world. To what end? Why help some third world country on the other side of the planet when we need so much ourselves? We have starving children in our own country. We have extream poverty in our own country. We have unemployment, under-education, lack of adequate health care and a host of other issues right in our own back yard. But to spend billions of dollars in a country that would rather hate us. . . I don't get it.

I am for helping those who need the help, I am for making sure that everyone who wants it has a good education, I am for everyone having a safe place to call home, but I am for making sure that our own population has all of that first.

I often wonder how we look to the rest of the world. "They help everyone else, while people are dying in their own country, what a bunch of hypocrites."

The fall of man kind! These countries who are starving are because of the government not doing what they should for the people. You have the guerrillas not allowing food to enter and then there are uncivilized people who only kill but don't plant. SO why try to find blame any where else? If you had all this money and gold, what would you do with it? I see Africans and South Americans starving, and then you have people from the those countries leave those places become rich and don't send a dime to support where they came from, Who's to blame??

hellow..
what causes poverty is "inequality" which derived from greed and ignorance.. (personal opinion)

if you want the fact check the link below..

* Half the world — nearly three billion people — live on less than two dollars a day.
* The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the poorest 48 nations (i.e. a quarter of the world’s countries) is less than the wealth of the world’s three richest people combined.
* Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.
* Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen.
* 1 billion children live in poverty (1 in 2 children in the world). 640 million live without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water, 270 million have no access to health services. 10.6 million died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5.

Consider the global priorities in spending in 1998
*Global Priority$U.S. Billions*
Cosmetics in the United States8
Ice cream in Europe11
Perfumes in Europe and the United States12
Pet foods in Europe and the United States17
Business entertainment in Japan35
Cigarettes in Europe50
Alcoholic drinks in Europe105
Narcotics drugs in the world400
Military spending in the world780

And compare that to what was estimated as additional costs to achieve universal access to basic social services in all developing countries:
*Global Priority$U.S. Billions*
Basic education for all6
Water and sanitation for all9
Reproductive health for all women12
Basic health and nutrition13
