Going to the zoo and visiting the gift shop is NOT a really cheap day out!!

I would suggest the beach - it is free - you can't get cheaper than that!

It's according to where you live, but I checked out prices on a 2 day vacation in and around Cincinnati, Ohio and for a 2 nights hotel stay, the Cincinnati Zoo, Newport Aquarium, and Coney Island's water park was under $300 (not counting food and gas).
Hope this helped you or anyone else reading my answer.

You can just take them to a really cool playground. Maybe pick up MacDonald's happy meals (I rarely got them as a child so it was always a treat) and bring along some stuff for the playground/park (bubbles, frisbee, waterguns...)

It depends where in the US you are...that would help with answers.

depends were u r my parents would take us to the seaside or down to the local park.
when we were teenagers we use to set up play days for the local kids in there school ( get stuff of the local council )
have a look at bus fares into the country.
ask the local farmers if you can show them around a working farm.

I would suggest a day at the park...maybe a train ride there. And a picnic and sports while there.
