Is it possible to have osteoarthritis at my age? 2 of the 6 symtoms match. and also the most common places that it occurs in is the knee and amnkle and hip. I think I have it in the knee and ankle. I'm only 12... is that possible? Go to http://www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/publishing.nsf/Content/pq-arthritis-osteoarth (Cut and paste it) and I have symtoms 1 and 3. Is it possible though?

Hey Nancy

It could be but then again it could a lot of other things. You need to see your doctor, explain to him what your symptoms are. He should refer you for tests that will determine what is causing the pain.

OK bear with me for a moment ... I do know there are some great sites on the web but there are also others that are not so good! They give you symptomos without taking into account most esential factors such as family history, possible injuries in the past, what other conditions you may have etc. etc. You know i had a young woman in my ward after she checked out a site, convinced herself she had contracted HIV and attempted suicide because she couldn't leave with it when in fact she had developed glandular fever. So please do not restrict your thoughts and feelings to web sites, instead become proactive, tell your mum how you feel, what your worries are and get her to to take you to see a doctor.

Bst wishes

Unfortunately, yes it is possible. While arthritis is generally a disease that people get as they get older, there are instances of children having it.

However, here's a couple of points.

1. There are only 5 symptoms listed, so I'm not sure what you're referring to as "number 3."

2. It's more likely you're going through what's called "growing pains." They're quite real and occur as your body literally stretches and grows.

3. If you have any concerns about this, you really need to tell your parent or guardian and go to a doctor.

I have a feeling you're fine. It would be very unusual for someone your age to have this disease (although physical inactivity, weight problems and injury can make you more prone to it).

Go to a doctor, hon, and describe your symptoms. Don't tell them you are worried about osteoarthritis - just tell them the symptoms you're having and let them find a cause that's probably more relevant to someone your age. Honestly, 2 out of 5 symptoms doesn't mean anything - there's probably 20 other diseases out there with similar symptoms.

Good luck.

EDITED TO ADD: I saw your additions - if your doctor has told you it's growing pains, then I would accept it. You're 12 - you're *constantly* growing. If you've been seen for this problem and you're still convinced that you know better, then ask your parents to take you to a different pediatrician. Do it nicely and calmly. Tell them you know they don't believe you, but it's real to you and you won't feel better until you speak to someone else. Then, if another doctor tells you that it's growing pains, let it go. You're 12 - chances are the doctors know more about whether it's osteoarthritis than you do. Don't let yourself grow up to be neurotic. It's one thing to feel like something's wrong with you, but something else entirely to be convinced of it despite all evidence to the contrary.

I don't see why age makes a difference. Osteoarthritis is caused by inflammation, breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage in the joints. More prone to older people, but like I said it can happen to anyone.

yes. However, I would not worry if you only have 2 of the 6 symptoms. If you are having aches and pains most likely it is do to growing pains. If you are really concern about it talk to your parents about it and see about going to the doctor.

I know a girl that was diagnosed with it in her lower back at age 18, but who knows how long she actually had it. It is possible, very rare, but possible.

Osteoarthirtis is VERY unlikely at your age. See a shrink for your hypochondria.

i know going to the doctor sucks and they might not find out whet you have until your bedridden it happens but try to eat nutritious foods and let your knee rest between exercises
