It was supposed to be a new GUI envorinoment for Windows 3.1. Many times it looked like a living room with a desk, bookshelves, coffee table, calendar, clock and such. So, if you clicked on the desk you would get maybe a notepad to scribble notes on. The problem with Bob is that when you installed a program, it squirrelled it away in the environment so you had to guess where it was put. Not many people took too kindly to the "helpers" either. Just look at Word and you will understand what I mean. Also, programs written for Bob did not run under Windows 3.1 well. Bob was a miserable failure.

Good old Microsoft BOB was a HELPER that came with the introduction to Microsoft Windows 95. He was not that popular, because you bought him separately.
He was very similar to the more familiar Clippit (Paper Clip) that comes with Microsoft Office. Of course, I prefer the ROBOT dude "F1".
