I was asked the same question for my high school yearbook picture. I answered "UFO Explorer". I had no clue what I was going to do and they wanted an answer "No one will have a blank picture statement", they got an answer and it was published.
25 years later, I will retire in Nov06 with over 21 years in the military. I have enjoyed what I did and I have made an impact on many individuals. Now my quest starts again to search for a new job.
All you need to do is step outside and look around, feel what is in your head, heart and what you have a Passion for. Everyone has something they want to do. You need to figure out what it takes to get you there and go for it.
Enjoy life and the jobs it gives you.

I don't know how old you are. I'm guessing you are in high school. I didn't know either then. The best thing I can tell you is to go to college load up on humanities classes(you will have to take them anyway) and then try and take one or two classes that have to something to do with what you are interested in. Like if you have an interest in people; take a pschology class, if you like music, and clothes, take a music class, art history or painting. If you think you want to be a lawyer take a law class and call a prominent lawyer and ask the secretary about her bosses profession; she might give you her boss to talk to directly or she might be able to answer your question(you can do this in any industry) tell them you are a high school student and you have to complete a project about what you wanna do when you grow and you are trying to get some answers. They love that stuff and most times will help. But the only way you can truly find out what you want to do in life is to get to know you. It was really unfair and at the same time good that your teacher asked you that question. Unfair because it is a rare few at your age(and I'm guessing it's young) that have "a plan" as to what they want to do with their lives. Fair because it gave you a heads up to let you know it's time to think about it. But don't think you have to have it all figured out tomorrow or by the end of the year or in the next month.

Take as many self-assessment tests as you can.

Learn your personality type (Myers Briggs, and there are others. Stay away from Kinsey's Myers Briggs, that one sucks).

Take vocational aptitude tests, you may learn about subjects/careers you never knew existed.

Turn off the TV. Everything looks interesting on TV. It's not healthy.

Don't feel pressured! Lots of people feel pressured like they only get ONE shot at a career. That's bunk. In fact, ask you teacher what he thinks about your future (and have him explain his reasons!) Sometimes getting outside advice is useful. If he doesn't have an answer then tell him to stop badgering you!

See the books listed below.

Unfortunately many young people have the same problem. Often they enter college and really do not know what they wish to do. If you are going to college, use your first couple of years to get the basic courses - the ones you need regardless. During this time do some hard soul searching and figure out exactly what your true interests are. Then go for it.

What would you do if you were given a million dollars????

What you chose is what you should be doing with your life...think hard...and work out how to get where you want in life.

Thats called planning.....Just decide what you want to do...and the rest will follow...thats the biggest step....and choose something that you enjoy doing and your life will be fun...
