A criminal should be made to SUFFER for his crimes not be treated as a victim (like we do to our criminals in the UK). The learning experience should start when young - that is when people learn.

For example. A 16 year old steals from a shop. he should be made to break rocks in a quarry from 6am - 6pm - real HARD LABOUR until he has served out a given set time period. Maybe he should work with only 1 meal a day or work in bare feet in heavy chains.

If you agree - you care for more the victim

If you disagree you are a pc do-gooder who is concerned more for the lawbreaker than the real victim or the law.

So what are you?

To Sarah C

I teachin a prison so know all about prisoner education. I have been burgled twice and my car robbed five times this year. I did read your answer and still say that unless we get tough with our YOUNG criminals they will continue in their criminal ways. Our UK law is a jackass.

A householder can be sued by a burglar for tripping over a rug he has no right to be walking on - GET REAL !!!!!

I figure your rant was as good as mine.

I also work in a youth offenders centre and see hundreds of young criminals every year. I see many (80% maybe) come back time and time again.

Education works for some prisoners and provides a way out of their criminal lifestyle.

Others however need a different approach. I know guys who if made to work real hard in a rock quarry AND made to really suffer without any mercy whatsoever (like barefoot in chains) - would start to learn and think twice. Some people need to learn the hard way AFTER trying the educational route.

I would suggest:

1st offence = Fine
2nd offence = Custodial educational sentence / meeting with victim to discuss offence etc
3rd offence = Hard barefoot slave labour as suggested
4th offence = Loss of hand
5th offence = Life in prison no appeal or parole

Something has to be done and sometimes being cruel and hard is the only way to make some people learn.

I understand your point of view but it is a view which belongs in the last century. We are a "civilised"society & we should treat everyone with dignity. That is to say all members of our community should be given an opportunity to learn thro example.Treating criminals by your standard will ensure they reoffend.Of course it is absolutely wrong to break the law...without question...but you must teach those that offend why they did so & how they can lead a positive & productive life.Try & see the broader picture..read about criminals & the reasons why they commit crime. I do not care more for the criminal than the victim...I myself have been a survivor of crime & it has helped me to come to terms with this ...simply by understanding the mind of the criminal.I hope for a society where we can walk the streets at night without fear..education & rehabilitation is the key to this evergrowing problem.

Now I understand.
You are talking about 2 opposite ends of the same spectrum;
Corporal Punishment - Hugs & Holidays.
Both of these are an individuals RESPONSE to crime!
Neither responses prevents crime.

We've had corporal punishment, national service, capital punishment, hard labour and workhouses and NONE of these responses prevents crime.
We've had hang, draw and quarter, the gibbet, the cat o nine tails, flogging, breaking rocks in a quarry, the treadmill.
Other countries behead, cut off hands, electrocute, give lethal injections, cram prisoners into tiny cells, ignore gang rape and buggery in prisons and yet still there are criminals.

You can put 2 people into the same situation and one of them will rob, rape, vandalise, and the other won't.
There are still honest people yet there is precious little reward for goodness or honesty.
Do yourself a favour and change your environment. Take your skills and look for a job where you can assist people who want to help themselves. That way you can feel like you're doing something positive and constructive, and you'll feel less angry about seeing the same old faces year in year out.

I'm just gonna keep this short- You are stupid. Just stop and think about what you are saying. Just really think. Have you spotted your contradiction yet?

You apparently work in a prison, doesn't that make you one of these 'do-gooders' that you seem to despise so much?
You want to protect people by taking away human rights, how does that work?

If you agree it's not that you care about one person over another it's that you care for human rights. I'll tell you why our prison and justice systems are f***** up, it's because people like you work in them.

Islamic Criminal Justice Code should be adopted.

If sixteen y.o. steals - then off with the hand. A second offence should be punished by capital.

If a person commits a sexually motivated offence then of with his bits and bobs.

Persons who commit adultery -

no, I'm not a PC do-gooder,

I just have an ounce of sense.
violence breeds violence.

If you want such an out-dated criminal justice system, move - the UK is not the country for you.

Try Afganistan, or Iraq, or Nigeria. I'm sure you'd like it there

Send all criminals to North Korea for a f***ing good kicking. And when they return stick them in a box and bury them alive the tossers.

Hell no. I hate do gooders, they mess up the world.

There are no easy black and white answers to deal with crime.
All methods seem to have downsides.

We have the same problems in America. Prisoners have it better than our millions of homeless.

Should we not try to rehabilitate the Criminal, instead of just torturing them?
