There is a small corner Italian deli around where I live and they sell BOTH. A hoagie is smaller then a Sub by about 1/2 the size. That is the difference. I live in south Jersey.

In Philadelphia, where I grew up, its called a HOAGIE. The name is attributed to a neighborhood called HOG ISLAND, where workers first started bringing lunch sandwiches of mixed meats, cheese, lettuce, tomato and onions on an Italian roll. The name "HOAGIE" is believed to be a corruption of "HOGGIE"--the nickname given to these Hog Island workers.

I'm originally from the Philadelphia area, and to me it's a hoagie. I don't know about other parts of New Jersey, but in South Jersey and at the shore, most people say hoagie as well.

I'm in the NY tri-state area too. Growing up, it was called a hoagie, hero or a sub in NY but in Southern CT it's called a grinder.
From what I understand, in the South they call it a Po' boy.

I live just west of Phildelphia, so we call them hoagies. I went to college in Lancaster, though, which is not too far from here, but the word "hoagie" confuses them. They call them subs.
This page has a good list of terms for this type of sandwich:
