it's a warning to others that the ball will be airborne so they can get out of the way if it looks like it's coming toward them.

Because yelling "THREE" seemed kinda stupid....OK, just trying to be funny....the first dude has the most logical answer. Also I don't believe you yell FORE before every shot....just if it looks like the ball is heading towards someone that may not be expecting it.

You don't yell fore before every shot, just shots that look like it's going to hit someone.

Fore means when you hit a ball and some one is in front of you like fifty or seventy yards in front and you might hit them you yell "FORE!!!!!"

i dont know what it derives from but they yell that to signal people to get out of the way,kind like ''heads up''
