Dont you think that when someone breaks into your house and steals all your stuff - he should be made to pay for it?
Lets say that he steals £3500 worth of gear. The insurance company replace the stolen items and then add on their operating costs - so £3500 may become £4500. Then you have the cost of the investigation by the police. So a £3500 theft could cost maybe £10,000 in total costs including insurance, police and the courts.
Should the guilty party not be put into a place where he works at say only £2 per hour to pay back the cost of his lawlessness?
This has to be better than a fine because he learns the lesson that we have to pay for the stuff we own - not steal it.
The law in the UK is a donkey.
A guy who robs a house can get away with a £150 ($200) fine !!!!
This needs to change - and while he is in the workhouse paying back his debt to society he can get all the counselling he needs - and our insurance costs or tax will not have to rise to pay for him.

Like you I believe a thief should have to pay off his debt plus costs. But he should have to do HARD LABOUR. Like work in a chain gang, or break rocks or dig trenches for road construction. Then when released if he commits again, maybe lose a hand, no jail time. Then if he commits again, Tattoo "I AM A THIEF" accross his face. Then if he commits again, just hang him. He is obviously is to stupid to learn his lesson.

They should be made to watch what they have have done to people in performing their acts of crime. Not everyone is rich if they have a nice place with nice things. An object could mean more than money to the person who lost it. Lazy people that do these acts should be made to work hard, If they don't know any better then they should learn. If it is an mental illness they should be treated for it. Or learn how to deal with the demons they live with

Actually burglary is never punished by fine alone. I work with the crown courts and have never seen it. It is a prisonable offence so it can't, by law, be punished with a fine. OFten thought the offender will also be given costs and compensation to pay

Not a bad idea at all.
I also think that once someone breaks into your house you should be able to legally use lethal force to stop them, knowing that the house owner can legally kill would be a good deterrent.
I think Nick c has the right idea too.

Do you know, people who violate other peoples space, with regards to burglary are the scum of the world. I would not piss on them if they were on fire.
