Thank you for this very interesting question. In order to understand this you need to understand the time in which this command was revealed.
At that time there were many battles, both for defensive reasons and battles with brigands on caravans that were trading goods between places. Also, there were constant attacks from the Quraysh tribe in Mecca against the citizens of Medina.
Most of the people killed in these battles were men, which left a lot of widowed women and fatherless children, more than the population could absorb comfortably. It was also forbidden to live with a member of the opposite gender without being married. Therefore, the rule of multiple wives was instituted in order that they and their children would have someone to take care of them.
Please observe this in the context of the society in that time. There were many women and children that needed caretakers, much more than men who had lost wives. So this is a way of helping them out in the context of a highly tribal society.
Nowadays few muslims take more than one spouse because, there is really no need. Society is different. Also it clearly says in the Quran that a man should not take even a second wife unless the first agrees and even then, only if he feels he can treat them both equally.
Polygamy exists in other cultures and religions but is rarely practiced anywhere any more.
It is my opinion that there is no longer any need for polygamy in Islam and that it should be ended. Personally speaking, when my wife and I were married we wrote into the nikah (islamic marriage contract) that I abrogated any rights to other wives. I think this is the proper thing to do, especially in countries, like the US where polygamy and polyandry are illegal.
I hope this is an answer that you can understand and I hope that nothing I have said has offended anyone, I apologize and ask forgivenss for anything wrong I have said.
Peace and Blessings,
Salim

good question...
well even if the man can have 4 wives he has to treat them equally, and there are strict conditions where another marriage can take place. But for Muslim women, i doubt they would want to spend a night with a different husband everytime anyway. The conditions apply for women too, so for example if the mad has some problem and he cant produce kids, the woman can ask for divorce and marry someone else
You all think Islam is unfair, but to think of it, a lot of women turn to islam and are actually really happy, the treatment of women isnt bad, some cultures do it only because they've been living along side other cultures too i.e hindus.
Islam treats women equally, if you dont believe that, go educate ureself

Good question. But then maybe it was permitted because the men lack the capacity for a faithful relationship.

this and many more customs are made in islam just so that the men can be in command over the women there. But now is the time to show your strength ladies. You have my full support.
