I'm wondering: is it better to name a child something exceptional so that he/she stands out from the crowd, or is that setting the child up for being an oddball? If you were named after a character from a tv show, rock band or something like that, would you think it was cool or be angry that your parents didn't give you a more "normal" name?

I am named after a celebrity from way back when! I am not angry. I think it just depends on how much of a big of deal you make out of it. I actually don't think much of it. Who cares that I have been named after someone else. Clearly that had a special meaning to my parents or to them it seemed unique.

I think people get used to whatever name they have. And being named after a celebrity or fictional character doesn't necessarily mean it's an "oddball" name... my cousin Alyssa got her name from Alyssa Milano, and nobody thinks that's oddball.

I would be proud that my parents saw fit to give me a name for something that they liked or admired. When my mother was pregnant with me 25 years ago, throughout her whole pregnancy she was hell bent that she was going to name me " Bambi Amanda" because she loved the movie Bambi. She didn't ( and I am thankfull.. not because of the name but because of what it represents in the 21st century ) but if she had, I would be happy because it was for something she loved. It would have more meaning to be named after someone that they liked, rather than just picking something "normal"

everyone has a story behind the name they were given. Most kids think oh "that's cool" or gosh mom & dad thats lame! Don't worry about it. All kids go thru periods when they HATE there name. One of my kids changed the pronounceation of there name for about a year (very demanding that you say it "right") she wouldnt even answer you if you said it "wrong" now I never hear anything about it and were back to the original birth name.
