I think it teaches self control and responsibility. It teaches respect for others.

"I promise to do my best to do my duty to God and to my Country and to help other people at all times and to keep the Girl Guide law"

It teaches you to work towards goals i.e. badges etc. You work towards becoming a leader or a seconder.

At least that is what it was when i was a Girl Guide

It might be a part of good education, only a part nevertheless.
Only thing is, that you have to have a close look at the adult people leading the scouts. I'm well aware that many great people will read this with anger - it is definitely not intended to offend these important members of the society. But it is a fact that perverted people (paedophilians for example) is highly attracted by such "opportunities".
That's why another part of good education is so important - confidence, trust. If the kids have a good and open relation to their parents, where everything can be discussed, that helps to keep danger away.

If being a member of an organisation which has good positive aims; high moral standards; teaches you to set and follow goals; encourages people to aim higher all the time while recognising and rewarding the steps along the way; gives you lots of variety in practical skills in sports, learning, arts and crafts and offers similar rewards for achievements in all of those fields; encourages acceptance and tolerance not only within the organisation but within the wider community; applauds the values of doing your best, helping not only your friends but any one who you are capable of helping, being unselfish, kind, caring and proactive; if all of that sounds like a good education to you then yes boy or girl scouts or any of the other similar organisations such as boys brigade, sunbeams etc is what you are looking for.

I think that Scouting is a wonderful thing for kids. It raises their self-esteem and confidence by teaching them social and practical skills that they might not get in other situations. It also encourages activities that many kids would never get to do: camping, crafts, group activities, etc., and many kids never have access to this otherwise.

The other thing I like about Scouting is that it doesn't matter that a child has a disability. The special needs child can get peer tutoring and mentoring that is invaluable to them, and the mentor also gets a lot from helping.

Scouting also encourages parental involvement, when other activities don't.

There are many positives to scouting - an appreciation of nature, an ability to work in groups and teams, a life long network of supportive people.
A parent also needs to be aware that the scouts are not the most inclusive of organizations and there might be friction between the parents' ideals and lifestyle and that of the optimum scout. Family discussion might be necessary to balance the two.

It warms my heart to see so many possitive posts regarding joining Scouts.

Yes, Scouting does provide a great learning environment and thus a great rounded education. But along with traditional education the 'educator' makes the difference (teacher/leader). If you have a good teacher/leader, you will have a good education. One way to assure the level of education your child receives in Scouting is to become the leader your self.

Absolutely! They teach respect, skills, teamwork and much much more and are really fun and good (safe) places for your children to socialise. I think that both the scouts and the brownies are fab and it would be great if more children would join them.

I rose to the dizzy height of a Seconder in the Sprites, I was so proud - never quite made Sixer though - darn it!!!

Baden Powell dressed a lot of little boys in short trousers, took them out into the woods and slept in tents with them. They made him a national hero. Anyone who tried it today would be looking at a 20 stretch.
