I'm a big fan of House, and Hugh Laurie, but it is a bit odd to see him doing this drawly US accent on the show. I wanted to know if "genuine American Folk" (quote Dubya) find his accent convincing, or does he sound as genuine to American's as Dick van Dyke sounds British to us ****-er-nees?!?!

It was so convincing it got him the job. Apparently producer Bryan Singer (director of Superman Returns) was looking through audition tapes and kept seeing foreign actors with dodgy American accents. Eventually he saw Hugh Laurie's and, not knowing who he was, said "See, this is what I want – an American guy." Not long after, Laurie got the job.

Well House was the first thing I'd ever seen him in and I was pretty convinced. I had no Idea he's actually from england. Then I saw flight of the pheonix I thought he was faking that accent so I looked it up on imdb....oops

I never even knew he was British until I saw him on a talk show. I believed his American accent enough to think he was American.

Absolutely. Had no idea he was English -- he is a great actor. Not all English people do a great American accent -- some are pretty noticeable.

He sounds pretty convincing to me, but in my opinion it doesn't really matter as his brilliant acting make up for any little slips accent wise.

It sounds ok to me. Sometimes he says a word kinda funny and I remember, "Oh, yeah, he isn't American." But most times, he sounds good.
