Historically speaking,and not just referring to the USA, the definitions can be the following (in a nutshell):
A left wing party is mostly liberal,like the Democrats.Don't forget that Socialist and Communist parties also belong to the Left, with Communists at the far left side.
A right winged party is mainly conservative,like the Republicans,however revisionist parties (to revise the Trianon Peace Treaties - like the Hungarian MIÉP), fascist and raceist parties (like the party of Mussolini and the nazis of Hitler) politically also belong/belonged to the right wing (the far right of course).
For more information on this topic I suggest you should go to a library and look up some books on political history.

I used to wonder about that, but generally, right wing people believe things like bringing back the death penalty, sending immigrants back to their own countries that sort of thing.
Left wing people believe in letting more immigrants into a country, no more wars, and kind of more passive.
BUT, that is only a general outline and you may get some left wing people believing in some right wing ideals or vise versa!

Left Wing parties are the ones their opponents call "Pinko Commie *******", and Right Wing parties are the ones their opponents call, "Fascist Bullies". On the Left you refer to the right as reactionary revisionist capitalist running dogs, on the right you refer to the left as," bleeding heart, tree_hugging hippy scum". It's all a question of opinion only, neither side actually has the facts, or the truth. The left wingers tend to be, Social Democrats, and the Right wingers tend to be, Christian Democrats, but that is a generalisation, there are exceptions to both.

"Reactionary revisionists", (right wingers)were sent for,"re-education" in the USSR and China.

"Looney lefties", or," Commie pinkos", are just subjects of ridicule in the US of A and western Europe.

Whichever side they are on, left or right, they are political animals and they are not to be trusted under any circumstances. Do not respect these people, they do not deserve it!

Right wing leans towards smaller government, less interference, autonomy?

The reason these things are hard to define, is because, let's say the country used to have prayer in schools and then the (liberal) Supreme court struck it down, and now, so-called Right Wing type folks are advocating CHANGE, -to return it back the way it was.

So I guess right wingers advocate 'change in policy'

Splitting political "parties" is a shroud to make you think your vote makes a difference. Beliefs of government right\left or whatever they want to call themselves have a single agenda: controlling the populous.
