Yeah, sleeping 18 hours a day is a bit much... my 1 year old sleeps 12 hours a night and about 2-3 hours a day and that seems to be good. I don't know if you got an appointment scheduled with your pediatrician, but I'd definitely bring it up. One question... is your little one sleeping through the night, or is he awake for large chunks of the night? I ask because my son was doing that... he'd get up at midnight or so and play for an hour or two... but he didn't do that for long.

My son sleeps 12 hours a night and can sleep up to 2 1/2 hours per nap (he has 2 naps a day). He's a ball of energy form all the sleep, but these little guys are really growing and developing and learning and it takes a lot out of them...I would'nt worry too much unless he seems unhealthy is some way. But during he wake hours, if he's normal, it seems all right to me. My doctor told me that some babies just need more sleep than others.

Although 18 hours is a bit much, he may be going through a growth spurt. I'd give it a bit longer, then ask your doc about it.
My son slept 12 hours per night and (2) 2-hour naps during the day around that age and he is fine...try fading his nap time down to 1 1/2 to 2 hours each (if he's napping 3 hours, then wake him at 2 1/2. Shave another 1/2 hour after a week, etc). I think 1 1/2 to 2 hour naps twice a day is average. The 12 hour nights, are fine. My son is 6 1/2 and STILL sleeps 11-12 hours per night...

My one year olds have always slept more than they ever did. They are growing and learning.. and sleep is the most important contirbutor to being healthy. Don't worry about it.. and just think, that while he's sleeping he's getting smarter and growing.

Consult your child's pediatrician, not the non medical yahoo answer people, if you really are concerned about his well being.
