this is a very modern society and the country is called United States of America. Dead people are buried in a coffin or cremated. Maybe this was the practice and the belief; how culture handles the dead. What difference will it make to a dead person? good question. You should know that there is no difference. none. If you wanna call it spirit, or call soul; it has departed the flesh moments before one's death. Flesh now would be nothing really. that much you should know, everybody should know

The coffin is used for sanitary purposes since a body gives of many waste gases and liquids that must be contained, the coffin helps. it also helps seal out air and moisture. to help preserve the body. of course with cremation coffin's are not needed any more, but it all depends on ones belief

for the ease of burying, for starters. It is easier to carry a box then a dead person. And not all people lok as good when they are dead then when they were alive... to a coffin will obscure things and leave the family with the memories they want, of the person as he/she was...

it doesn't make a difference. but that's not the point, the coffin just shows that we respect the dead, i guess its kinda a superstition that just stuck through the ages, to show that we respect the dead and to make the dead more comfortable

No but it keeps bugs and flesh eating stuff out. If doctors need to go in and see if they really died the way they think they died then it could be a problem

Funerals are not for those who have died as much as for the people who loved them and are aching for them. It is closure and respect - so we feel better. Right?
