It may have been banned due to its anti-christian themes. I know the same thing happened in China also.

The supreme court did not say anything about it as it was not referred to the court. The censor board cleared it and some missionary groups went on the streets seeking ban. Finally, the movie was released in most states with an A certificate and a note stating it is a work of fiction. Some states like Mizoram, Andhra Pradesh and Goa banned the movie. I watched it in a theatre and it was good but novel was better.
