These phrases mean to not wait for the legal system to deal with someone that commits a crime.

If you act as a 'vigilante', you decide what punishment is necessary, and then carry out that punishment yourself.

For instance, vigilante justice for a rape might involve a family member or friend of the rape victim, tracking down the rapist and removing the rapist's genitals

Vigilante justice tends to occur when the governmental legal system is seem by the citizens as not performing quickly or harshly enough.

Dunno about MY brand of vigilante justice, but one time, a neighbor kid- B- whitewashed my baby bro- S- he was in 2nd grade at the time.... One of my other brothers- K- same age as the neighbor kid shoved his face in a snowdrift....

K was carrying out vigilante justice against B for S... and I approve of what K did.... B was always a weenie, never did like him.

I kind of like vigilante justice- it's short, sweet and to the point. My brand of vigilante justice would probably be of the poetic kind... like cutting off the hoo-hoo of every rapist and child-molester... "If you can't play with it nicely, then you don't get to play with it at all"

Or the wealthy philanderer who gets an STD from his mistress, and his wife divorces him, taking him for everything he has.... or maybe this example is a case of karma on steroids... LOL!!
