I wonder whose lack of creativity caused two of the most popular sports on Earth to have the same name. Doesn’t it make more sense to call the sport played with one’s feet “football”? Please don’t tell me that football is called that because players kick the ball to start a game or to make a field goal. The use of feet is minimal in both cases. The fact that running is done with your feet, and players must run in possession of the ball in order to “touch down” is not enough to call it “football” over soccer either. Baseball and basketball take running with a ball too, and they have their own names.
I personally think that there is no sport that deserves to be called football more than soccer does, because no other sport involves the use of one’s feet more than it. I also think that if soccer was officially created first, football fans should find another name for their sport, like Egg-ball for example, given the shape of the ball. The NFL would turn into the NEL! Isn’t that exciting?

Football first ... as it is called by people in 4 other continents, even in South America.

American Football came loooong after that ... and they gave it the wrong name too.

Imagine, calling a game played by hands ... FOOTball???? Where's the logic in that???

As pol_douglas factors out it really is a corruption of 'Assoc(iation)' football. on the time in Oxford and Cambridge there replaced right into a trend for replacing words to end in '-er', so an undergraduate would bypass for a lekker after brekkers (lecture after breakfast). i'm not particular if 'rugger' replaced into coined a similar way, yet Charles Wreford-Brown replaced into requested through a pal "Are you playing rugger on the prompt?" to which he suggested "No, i'm playing football." i do not realize why the splenetic outbursts adverse to Yanks for calling it football - in spite of everything they have their personal code of 'football' which has been going considering 1863. Come to that what about Australian regulations football? Do you anticipate the Aussies to call it some thing except footy? Their association football crew is termed the Soccerroos, for goodness' sake! enable's merely go away it that many diverse cultures have their personal type of 'football' and communicate to it such, meaning for applications of disambiguation they could use words like football, gridiron, Aussie regulations etc at the same time as they're conversing about different activities presented from outdoors.

'Football' in New Zealand is Rugby! I have always wondered why Association Football had to change to 'Soccer' an abreviation of "Association'. New Zealand is of course a religion in NZ>
