Generally anyone your close to as this varies from person to person. It all depends on the contract of employment and how specific or vague they are. use examples of different company's policies. Then contrast who offers a wider range with those that offer the statutory minimum. Who wins? Most employees will leave a company if the do not have adequate compassionate leave, so the company saves a few quid? not worth it.

the amount of compassionate leave depends on the closeness of the relative, when my grandfather died my mother had 10 days, but my dad only had three cos he was his father in law.

Parents, Husband/wife, children and grandparents.
It depends on how closely your related to them as to how much time your allowed off, the company you work has it's own rules. When my grandmother dies a couple of years ago, my Dad (her son-in-law) was given a week off to help my Mum and Aunt sort her house out, and then a day off for the funeral. Me and my brother were allowed a day off work for the funeral (this was on top of our Annual Leave).
When my uncle died, the whole firm he (and my Dad) worked for, shut for half the day to allow all the staff to attend the funeral.

It depends on the firm you work for. Most companies include spouse, children, parents & siblings. Others allow it for "significant others", grandchildren, grandparents, etc. Check with your firm's human resources department.

Usually they mean close relations: mother, father, brothers and sisters and grandparents. However exceptions can be made for other people, say an aunt if for some reason you have been particularly close to them.
