Depends on how severe the knocking noise is, and when it knocks. If it knocks when it's in idle as well as when you accelerate but becomes more rapid the faster you go... Mild knocking noise: check your oil level. You just may need a quart (or two). A hard knocking noise: Park your car at the mechanic's. It could be a bent rod in your engine--not, I repeat, not good. Engine killer right there. If it only knocks when you accelerate, like when you're going uphill, try a higher octane gas. Or you could just need a tune-up. Often the problem is something simple, so don't let a mechanic screw you out of big bucks unless it is a big problem. And then, still shop around and don't take any crap from them.

it depends where you think the sound is coming from. for instance under the hood... it can be a rod or bearing going out. or when you turn a corner it can be the rack and pinion steering, and or under the car it can be the muffler or cracked rotor..... it can be a number of things making your noise what you need to do if your really worried about it... take it to a good mechanic shop and normally they will do free estimates.

my car was just doing that recently and it turned out to be one of the cylinder valve heads. Cost to fix is looking to be about $1200. Take your car to autozone or some place like that and ask them to diagnostic test your car. You'll get some codes and a general idea of what the problem is. That way if you do need to take it in for repairs, you can tell the garage/mechanic and not get ripped off.

If it is truly a knocking noise, that could indicate a bad main bearing. Very bad sound.

You should have mentioned how old is your car??????????
If the car is not that old than the problem could be either not enough oil in your engine or low grade gasoline.....
If your car is more than ten years or so I would recommend to show it to mechanic

TRY RUNNING IT ON A TANK OF PREMIUM GAS .... SOMETIMES HIGHER OCTANE WILL ELIMINATE KNOCKING
