Psychological Effects of Dancing
"When I dance, I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole.
That is why I dance."
Hans Bos
Endorphins:
The effects of dancing are multi-faceted, along with the obvious (and not obvious) physiological effects, there are many psychological effects resulting from dance.
First of all there is the sense of well being associated with any form of regular exercise. Neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine as well as endorphins are produced during exercise, increasing physical feelings of wellbeing, which in turn translate into emotional and mental wellbeing, as well as a reduction in tension.
Serotonin is a key neurotransmittor with many diverse roles to play. Low levels are often associated with psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression. Problems sleeping have also been linked with decreased levels of serotonin.
Twenty types of endorphin have been discovered in the nervous system. Research in the 1980s showed that their production was not restricted to the brain, as previously thought, but that they were secreted throughout the whole body. They have an effect similar to that of morphine, indeed their name comes from a shortening of endogenous morphine. They are the body's own natural painkillers, or "feel-good" drugs
Endorphins are not only produced during exercise and evident in other physiological functions:
* Central nervous system and peripheral analgesia and pain modulation
* Chronic pain
* Gastro-intestinal function
* Cardiovascular regulation
* Temperature regulation
* Food consumption control
* Respiration
* Vomiting
* Immunological processes
* Regulation of anterior pituitary hormones
* Neuroendocrine control of reproduction
* Childbirth
Essentially endorphins are secreted to remove stress or pain by blocking the signal of pain to the nervous system by binding to opiate receptors. They also increase the dopamine flow to the frontal lobe of the brain, causing a sense of pleasure.
Other Effects...
Dancing has cardiovascular effects, helping to increase health and decrease blood pressure, as well as improving fitness levels and helping to reduce obesity. This increased level of healthiness often increases a sense of well being and the reduction in risk factors may help alleviate anxiety and stress about future ill health.
Social interaction resulting from dancing also helps to combat depression, and the non-verbal expression of feelings that is possible in dancing may also help people resolve underlying psychological problems.
Dancing also helps in improved co-ordination and concentration levels, all helping to combat stress .

First of all, it is sooo fun. I have been dancing for 9 years and I absolutly love it. Second of all it builds self-esteem. I used to be so shy and I would talk to very few people. Now I am very outgoing and I get along with everyone. I feel great about myself and I feel like I have achieved alot with dance. It keeps you in physical shape and I stay very healthy. I always have something to do after school and I have made alot of great friends.

Dancing allows me to express myself, and let all my stress out. Whenever I feel a certain such as sad, lonely, hurt, loved and so on, you can tell it by the way I dance. So many people say 'I can't dance', but if they just move to their own feelings, and let music overtake their bodies, then they can to dance.
