Ignore this stuff that is written above me. Firstly you have to remember, Axl and Slash were never super close, they worked together, but they weren't like brothers. Anyhow Steven Adler was the first to go because of his drug problems (this coming from a group of other drug addicts saying he was too bad ha), but yeah his usage got incredibly insane and he almost caused Axl's gf Erin Everly to OD at the time. Then Izzy Stradlin left because he got tired of playing the big venues and he thought it had just gotten too big. The rest of the band carried on with replacements and everything was okay until around 1994. Gilby Clarke, Izzy's replacement, was let go because he wasn't needed at the time but then Axl brought in an old friend to help them record a song for the Interview with the Vampire soundtrack. Matt Sorum didn't like him so that caused problems and Matt ended up walking out on the band and when he came back Axl fired him (He was a replacement too). Axl, Slash, Duff and a few other replacements worked on stuff, but Slash wanted to do an album more like his solo stuff (Snakepit) while Axl wanted to make an album like Use Your Illusions again. They couldn't come to an agreement so Slash quit GNR. Duff stayed for 2 more years and they brought in Robin Fink at Duff's request and some other top name guys. Duff left in 98 because the band had taken some time off and nothing was getting done. Axl regrouped and hired some great musicians to replace the people that quit and they worked on stuff until they played live in 2001, then 2002 they toured, then Buckethead quit and they had to replace him and in 2006 they came back geared to go.
To wrap it up though, Slash and Axl just had different directions. Slash wanted to make a bluesy album and Axl wanted to make an album more tailored to the other GNR stuff. Slash walked away because of that, not because Axl was an asshole. Axl is slowly making up with the old guys, he's hung out with Gilby and he's becoming friends with Izzy again. He even gave Matt Sorum a ride home in NYC one night!. But yeah, musical direction is the main reason they broke up. Go see the new band though, they're great...and see Slash's band Velvet Revolver too.

The original band has broken up. Steven, Izzy, Duff and Slash are no longer in the band. Even Matt & Gilby parted ways with the band. The only original member in the band is Axl Rose.
The reason the original band broke up was pretty much too much drugs, too bigger egos and differing musical styles.

Because Axl was missing shows, walking offstage, refusing to cooperate with anybody, made decisions without talking to the rest of the band first, forced the group to sign the rights to the name Guns n' Roses over to him, etc., etc., etc.
It became Axl's show, and the other guys had to go along with it, or they were out. Eventually, none of them wanted to put up with his **** anymore.
