The sky "seems" blue because that is the colour that is reflected back into our eyes (same as why leaves are green etc etc). You can smell the rain before it arrives due to a bacteria that lives in the soil, which the smell has been likened to a wet road. When it starts raining the drops of rain stir up the bacteria in the soil and they enter your nostrils. Although it may not be raining exactly where you are, it will be raining a few meters/kilometers away and therefore you can smell the bacteria. This bacteria has been inocculated in agar plates and people have been asked to smell it and say what it smells like. They all said "A wet road". I learnt this from Dr Karl. :o)

Huckelberry has it just about right...
The sky is blue because all the other colors of light coming from the sun are refracted away by the atmosphere ...so only blue is left.
The smell changes BEFORE rain.. because of water droplets forming around dust particles..becoming heavy...starting to fall and bringing air down with them from the upper atmosphere as they fall... The air they push on as thery fall is pushed lower to the surface where you are...and you smell that different air.
This air reaches the ground before the rain...and it's often older polluted buildup that briefly smells bad, especially in a crowded urban areas like a big city.
Then the rain starts... and the wet road answer triggering smell that we associate with wet roads applies AFTER rain has fallen.

I live in FL, & while I am not sure if you can smell the rain, but you can tell that the rain is coming when the temputure drops & the air feels moist. I think the sky is blue because outerspace is so dark & the sun is so bright that we see a mixture of both (with is blue).

The sky is blue because the atmosphere absorbs every other color in the spectrum except blue. You can smell rain before it falls due to the downdraft of air in front of a rainstorm.

the sky is blue because molecules in the atmosphere reflect blue light from the sun, when the sun sets or rises, they reflect different light because the sun is in a different position. i dont think a humans nose is sensitive enough to smell rain , but the air becomes humid and warm so most can sense a storm.

The chemical composition of the air is such that only the blue wavelength of light will penetrate the atmosphere of visible light.
I can smell rain before it falls sometimes, because the weather is changing and cloud cover affects the sunlight, which affects the scent of the land sometimes.

the sky is blue because of the dust particles present in the atmosphere and it is also due to the refraction of light. about that smelling the rain before it falls, i don't know.. haven't experienced it yet.. hehe.. :p
