As a folk musician, that is a tough question to answer honestly because the "impact" of a particular song has as much to do with how and where I picked it up as the words and music.

For example, I was lucky enough to have Elizabeth Cotten play "Freight Train" for me on the banjo back when I was just starting to play. In some ways that songs means something to me because it's a great song and in other ways it means something to me because this amazing musician took the time to give me a few pointers.

Every song I know has some kind of a story attached to it - and the thing about folk music that is so cool is that each of us has a different story. What we play and how we play is a reflection of who we are, who we wish to be, where we have been, the mistakes we have made, the people we love and all of that good stuff.

Classic folk music? Try "Wimoweh" and "If I Had a Hammer" by the Weavers, "C.C. Rider" by Mississippi John Hurt, "This Land is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie, and "Green, Green Rocky Road" by Dave Van Ronk.
