I believe that there are issues with color within each race. The lighter you are, the better you are supposed to be, which is a fallacy at best. Mexicans are some of the most enviable people on this earth, and I respect them so much for their hard work ethics and sense of family. But, I think that they do discriminate against the ones who look more "Indian."

My mom is French and my dad is from Guadalajara, Mexico (and he looks like Michael Douglas). I was born and raised in Mexico City, and yes, there is some inequality going on, even unconsciously. Most rich people here are white because, well, Europeans colonized the region and abused the natives. I went to an upscale school, Olinca, where kids were mostly white. I used to live in New York, travel frequently to Europe, and work with people from different countries. I'm constantly asked if I am Italian (I think my ethnic look would be called Mediterranean). The "racial" gap is as old as the country, and it shows.
I'm not rich or anything like that, I'm a writer, and even so when it comes to places I frequent, people aren't very native-looking because usually if you are native looking you are poor and without access to education and you probably won't be attending film festivals or literature events, but will be easily found in not-so-nice neighborhoods.
Also, curiously, all Mexicans tend to love foreigners, and studies show there is a rampant case of auto-racism here. Even the great majority native looking people think whiter folks are "better" (they are obviously and historically mistaken, in this case).

There are large groups of white Mexicans, especially in Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Mexico City. White Mexicans are usually the children of white Spaniards, but there are also white communities of French, Italians, and Jews (the Jewish communities of Mexico are the most solidly white communities in Mexico, because they rarely marry non-Jews). These groups tend to be very wealthy in Mexico and prefer to marry within their communities. Generally speaking there isn't racial tension, but whites are glamorized by both Mexican society and media. Although there is racial discrimination, particularly in terms of jokes, against indigenous looking people. In cities like Guadalajara and Monterrey, the patrons of the night clubs are mainly white. Although there are few blacks in Mexico there is a generally very harsh stigma against blacks. Overall there is no major racial tension within Mexico, mainly color is associated in social class.

I have cousins that live in Mexico-and it is true-the more European you are, the less discriminated you are. IN THE STATES, we generally don't separate. I'm Mexican-American and my group of Mexican friends is diverse. I'm a light skinned Mexican and it doesn't matter to me how European my Mexican friends look. That is irrelevant here. It doesn't matter. We're all Mexican in our eyes.

i'm mexican american but i hang out will ALL types of nationalities.
my mom is a really REALLY light-skinned mexican( i think it's from the spanish from spain coming to mexico) and my dad is like, way WAY far from that, he gets it from the aztec indian blood)and me, well i'm right in the middle. my mexican friends all have different skin tones and we're all friends.
i've noticed that in novelas(spanish soaps) that the actors on there are light mexicans...and it makes me angry that i dont' see any dark-skinned mexicans....the only one that i can think of is "La India Maria"...she's awesome and hilarious!
i think in mexico they DO have some issue with skin color...i'ts ridiculous though because if we're all mexican, then why should it be a problem to have dark skinned mexicans AND light skinned mexicans on the same show.

Many of the lighter skin Mexicans are Jewish. It is natural that they would feel more comfortable with people of their religion and social status. I just read an interesting article about the role of Africans in Mexico. They were assimilated and now are seen as the darker skinned Mexicans you refer too.

hahahahaha. Darker skinned mexicans usually have more native blood in them they are more indigenous looking. I don't know of any tension in Mexico regarding color. And they are not 'white' Mexicans they just have lighter skin and they might be offended if you don't recognize them as Mexicans period. Unless they were born here. Also it sounds pretty funny when you ask if these 'white' mexicans only hang out with each other, and the darker ones hang out with each other, its like me asking, do blond white people only hand out with blond white people and red headed white people with red headed white people? People in general tend to hand out with other PEOPLE who speak the same language its about communication not apperance.
