People have the right to make their own life choices,but nobody can control the choices and decisions made by others.If you choose to let others dictate to you what you can and cannot do, then you will no longer have freedom of choice. Personally I believe it is better to take chances then never be free at all to do your own thing.The scars and broken bones are worth it in the end.

I think you only have a problem here if you take the phrase "choose your own destiny" to imply that you have full and complete control. Your other phrase, "captain of your own ship", is much closer to the truth, because sometimes ships hit icebergs, right?

I rented the movie "Born into Brothels" and it answered the question pretty well, I thought. I had a friend who said Katrina victims shold have known better than to live in the bowl of New Orleans. This so incensed me I dumped him.

I did not choose to be victimized when hit by a drunk driver,but i did choose to get into my car. so maybe i was accepting that risk as my choice.
