For the most part, sex in movies is gratuitous. There are times, however, when it is germane to the story. Case in point: "Unfaithful," starring Diane Lane, Richard Gere and Olivier Martinez (a snacky treat, if ever there was one). The story is of a married woman who spirals into the treacherous world of an affair. It demonstrates the where, the how and the why of such liasons, and the sex is integral to the story. Oddly enough, the sex in this movie is far less revealing than I expected (and braced myself for). But it was necessary to understand the psychological and physical ramifications of an affair.
On the other hand, you have movies where it's so completely obvious that sex was thrown in just for the sake of getting people to see it. I've noticed a trend of strip club scenarios in movies these days that is completely unnecessary. The scenes of which I speak (write) are always conversations that take place between two individuals (most often two men). Example: "Matchstick Men," starring Nicolas Cage and Sam Rockwell. This is a great movie in every way except for the strip club scene. The conversation that took place there could have happened anywhere - - a restaurant, a bar, or even a park! So why did it happen in a strip club? My opinion is they did it just to show trailer clips that will grab the attention of a certain audience they might not otherwise lure in to see the movie.
I have conservative values, but I'm by no means a prude. I can, and often do, watch movies that have sex scenes in them (some way more graphic than others). I usually fast forward through those bits, unless it's a necessary part of the movie (which it usually isn't). I would prefer more romance than sex in movies. There is nothing quite like a long-awaited kiss or even a glance.. a touch... to ignite my ardour.
Example: "Age of Innoncence," starring Daniel Day Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Rider. There's a scene that takes place between DDL and MP when they share a carriage ride. There is no conversation, and the music alone builds the tension as the two paramours do all that they can to avoid and ignore each other. All the while, the camera starts to zoom in on their hands perched precariously side-by-side on the seat. Slowly, as the carriage bumps along, their hands meet in the slightest - - and most forbidden - - manner. The moment is fleeting and almost nothing....but it's jam-packed with meaning and tension so thick you could slice it and serve it on toast.
THAT to me is real story telling. The characters eventually consumate their relationship, and you know this, not because it's shown graphically for all the world to see (which would be highly inappropriate for the Victorian era it depicts), but because it's alluded to in the consequent aftermath. Much more effective, in my opinion.

I think that sex is overdone in films in general, but it's necessary and fitting sometimes. Simply, good films are art, art imitates life, and sex is a natural, necessary part of life, so therefore, a good film can have sex in it, why not? If done the right way (e.g. not too silly, over-the-top or pointless), if it's necessary to move the plot forward, and if it's filmed the right way with the right people, a sex scene can round out a movie.

Depends on the movie really. if it is a romance movie then there has to be some kind of loving making, but there is no point of that idea in a drama or action movie.
Overall i say yes it should be either in soft or hardcore ****...

The point is to keep the viewer amused. We would all like to think that if a meteor shower is hitting earth, there's still time to get laid. I know what you mean. But most people see it as a selling point. I really hate to bash people, but we are kinda shallow. This is why I love my animals...

It has no point. They just do this because they will get more people to see a movie. I could do without seeing it in the movies. It is tasteless.

I agree with you to some extent, but I also believe that any sort of sexual tension just adds to the plot. It shows the relationship of two characters. It's not nessacery, but I dont find it offensive.
