how can I get a smudgy look with kohl or eye pencil?

Put the eyeliner on, then use your little finger, or a q-tip and gently and carefully smudge it. A soft, dull pencil works the best. Some times a tiny dab of makeup remover will help, but you don't want too much or it will run/come off and you have to start over. A drop of baby oil works too.

Practice in the mirror until you know how to get the look you want. And if you poke yourself in the eye... well, remember we have to suffer for beauty! ;)

You have to make sure your kohl or eye pencil isn't very sharp. The tip should be slightly rounded. You can use some eyeshadow as a base if you want the smudgy look. For example, if you're going to use brown kohl, use some brownish eye shadow really close to the lash line then use the kohl and rub very gently with your finger. You can also line the inside of your eye (bottom lid), although it makes the eye look slightly smaller.

use a blunt kohl or pencil and smudge it with a q-tip or the sponges which are sometimes provided at the other end of the pencils.

i personally recommend khol as they are usually softer on the eyes and easier to blend. not to mention the colour is more intense than most pencils. =)

also, practice makes perfect.

make sure that you use eye cream to prep the eye, them use a slightly dull eye pencil to outline eye using using sort, quick strokes. Don't drag, this will look too harsh. Then take a Q-tip and drag over eyeliner and slightly out. Finally, powder right up to liner so you won't have racoon eyes later.
