Actually, painting falls under fine arts, and while things like color theory, layout, etc., are important to ANY art-field, you definitely don't need to be a painter to be a graphic designer. Graphic designers work primarily on the computer, and it's a completely different experience working on the computer than holding a brush and painting on canvas. Do a web search on graphic design programs and you'll begin to see what's needed to learn graphic design and what graphic designers actually do.

If you have the gift then it is really necessary to have patience the both are key factors for success in Art field or anything.
Start from projects that really interests you and think about the process more than the final result, this will help you to do art activity with more patience .

You don't need to be a painter to be a graphic designer, layout, typography and other areas of graphic design do not require of strong painting skills. You need to learn to be patient though, because visual communications is 30% inspiration 70% perspiration.
