Why work in 2 dimensions, when you could work in 3? Forget graphic design. You should really be looking at visualization. You'll still get to use your photoshop skills, but doing a much more interesting job.
Programs to study: Maya, 3DS Max, Rhino etc..
Just think of the possibilities!

A good place to start would be by working for a printing company. Graphic design has changed much in the last 20 years, with the invention of these computer things. Printing has not changed very much at all in the last 50 years, sure equipment has gotten better, but the principles are the same. It is easier for a printer to become a graphic artist than vise versa. Start from bottom and work up rather than the other way and remember, experience is what lets you recognize a mistake the second time you make it.

Illustrator is more of a industry standard than freehand, so learn that. You will also need to know how use Quark and/or InDesign which are publishing programs. If you like web design, you at the very least need Flash and Dreamweaver. If you like 3-D everything the other answerer's mentioned are good choices.

i agree with the poster who said illustrator and quark or indesign. if you're not alrady working on a mac, learn to. virtually everyone in the business is on macs. also, making sure you know other graphic design related computer skills...do you know different ways to make pdfs? do you know about all the different file types? do you know a computer, software and hardware, inside and out and troubleshooting? that is the kind of stuff you will run into a lot as a beginning graphic designer in addition to the artsy stuff...trust me!

You should study Graphic Design. The concepts of composition, use of color, typography are as important as learning how to use the tools of the trade like pencils and software.
