Without a doubt, Australia. Italy were awarded a penalty (that clearly wasn't) in the 94th minute. Totti went on to score the penalty thus ending Australia's run in the World Cup.
If that had not been awarded the match would have gone to extra time, and IF Australia had then gone on to win, they would have faced the Ukraine in the quater finals.
There is a considerable chance that they would have ended up in the semi's against Germany! For a country that had never scored a goal in the World Cup finals before they had a great run!
Lots of 'If's' in this response, but that is exactly why Australia were the unluckiest team in this World Cup!

Well, the United States, while in my opinion not deserving to advance, certianly had some awful reffing. Against Italy, they were given two red cards, that, in my opinion, should just never be red cards. Against Ghana, a match they needed to win to advance, Ghana's winning goal came on a penalty kick that was just a really, really awful call (United States defender Onweyu knocks a Ghana player down inside the penalty, but it is a 50-50 ball situation, they are both playing the ball, not hte man, and Onweyu doesnt even touch the player with his arms or hands or anything, its all with his body and is legal). However, I would say that the unluckiest team could be any team that has lost out on penalty kicks. Apart from that, Ecuador almost went up 1-0 over England, but Tenorio's shot (I think it was his) was deflected a great defensive play by Ashley Cole, and hit the crossbar. Later, they went down 1-0 on a Beckham free kick that was perfectly placed. Also, Ghana jumps out, because of their 3-0 loss to Brazil was really a much closer game. The first Brazil goal came early on a defensive mistake, the second was very probably offside, and the third was very late. Ghana outplayed them in my opinion, but Dida kept denying them, and they never got lucky. Also, Portugal was rather unlucky against France. That penalty kick, well, it just shouldnt have been one. Still, they didnt deserve to win, and were relatively lucky before that.

1. Holland. Referee Ivanov couldn't hold control of the match, so it became closest to a fight than a football game.
2. Argentina, 'cause lose at penalty kicks.
3. England, same way. I guess refereeing wasn't a key factor in this match. Rooney fully deserved red card.
4. Cote d'Ivoire was pulled out 'cause its group was so far the most harsh of the whole tournament
Other teams simply waste their chances, in example:
Australia fails to increase tempo against Italy, who played so far its worst match. If you control match stats, you can see how Italians gets more opportunities than opponent - and they were playing 10 vs. 11.
Ghana could win Brazil, but they overestimated the opponent (as we all did, I guess), choosing a suicidal offside tactic. Sure they were figuring mass attacks from Brazil, but they could only play with fast break attacks - and score 2 goals in offside foul anyway.

those days, i think of that's Spain. In 1998 they left fairly because of the fact they have been given an extremely demanding team interior the draw, in 2002 because of the fact of undesirable referee calls, and this 12 months that they had a undesirable day against France, even nonetheless they performed better. universal, and as surprising because it kind of feels, i think of that's Brazil. regardless of prevailing 5 cases, there are a minimum of four different international Cups that Brazil might desire to´ve won: In 1938, Brazil lost to Italy interior the semifinals on a undesirable penalty call (that´s what I pay attention, a minimum of); In 1950, the biggest catastrophe in WC background, Brazil lost to Uruguay in front of two hundred,000 followers; In 1978 Brazil did not make to the merely actual because of the very questionable 6-0 score that Argentina imposed on Peru; In 1982, an superb Brazilian team lost to Italy in an superb 3-2 score. on the time, Enzo Bearzot, the Italian coach himself suggested that had those communities performed 10 video games, Brazil might´ve win 9 of them. i understand that's fairly speculative, yet that´s all we are able to do right here, speculate...

AUSTRALIA ...
With only 5 seconds to play, the referee awarded a penalty to Italy ...
I mean, I'm sure Italy would win it in the extra time ... but it's just unbelievable that the referee awarded penalty with only seconds to play ...

England have due to that dirty cheating diving winker!!
But yeah, Aussie's were unlucky as Italy's penalty was a bit harsh, and then Brazil were as Henry (uncharacteristically) did fool the ref in order to win the free kick for their first goal.

Brazil because once again, they have been jinxed by the French. They have NEVER won a game against the French and then they got unlucky enough to have to play against them. Really too bad.
