How did the person react? Did it backfire?

Do you have a story of a prank gone wrong?

Yes, I do have a good sense of humour (despite my tendency toward self-criticism, even I recognize that quality in myself). But because I have a good sense of humour I neither tell "jokes" nor engage in pranks (or practical jokes). I've never been amused by such things and have witnessed, firsthand, the nasty effects of a prank gone wrong. Some people are prone to getting quite angry when made the victims of pranks and practical jokes, so it's best only to dish these out if you are absolutely certain you can take what's coming right back at you (i.e., know who you're dealing with and steer clear if you don't).

Ahem, that said, the last time I pulled a prank on anyone was a retaliatory strike, of course (you know my code about initiating "hostilities"). My friend Phil, with whom I've worked for a couple of years, had sent out an interoffice memo, seemingly issued by me, which invited everyone to my "coming out" party. Ha ha ha, very funny, Phil. I am of course straight, as is Phil, and not even remotely homophobic so, after clearing things up around the office (good grief) I was able to laugh it off... but I soon plotted my revenge... {diabolical laughter ensues}

As I've already indicated, Phil and I are good mates and because of this I know all sorts of personal information about him, including his home address, telephone number(s), personal email addresses, etc. Phil also happens to be married, to the lovely Tina (indeed, they have a baby now, as well), so I knew I could maximize his embarrassment if I made my retaliatory strike very personal in nature -- and quite close to home. {even more diabolical laughter}

The best plans, of any description (serious or nay), need to be well coordinated. So my first step was to get good ol' Phil on some mailing lists of the alternative lifestyle variety (this included both email and snail mail, btw). I bided my time with all of this because, as the old axiom goes, "revenge is a dish best served cold" and anyway it was nice to see Phil sweating this out, wondering when and how my vengeance would strike.

As the various gay newsletters and emailed solicitations from gay dating sites began to trickle in, Phil brought it to my attention (good humouredly, I hasten to add) and assumed this was my comeback. Oh Phil, surely you didn't think it stopped at that, did you? {louder diabolical laughter, building to a crescendo}

The final component to the plan was now ready to be launched, especially as Tina was already giving Phil strange looks when she brought in the daily mail, lol. I'd discreetly printed copies of some photos of a particularly creepy-looking, rather effeminate, young man from a teen idol website (no clue if the guy was gay or not and it didn't matter). With the help of one of the techie geeks in our IT department I was able to turn these half-dozen or so photos into picture postcards suitable for mailing. All that remained was to give him a name (I chose Barry) and write some very personal -- and quite revealing -- messages in carefully disguised handwriting and then address them to our Phil. {very dramatic diabolical laughter which then terminates in a series of coughs}

I thoroughly enjoyed Phil's own narrative of his reaction upon receiving these "romantic" postcards, especially Tina's puzzled looks when she handed him this unexpected mail upon his arriving home from work (I'd spread them out so one would arrive each day for about a week). Too funny! God bless him and the ever patient Tina who is quite accustomed to living with Phil's practical jokes. When I was next invited over to their house for dinner, I found that he'd affixed each postcard to the refrigerator! LMAO...

I hope you enjoyed that as much as I did, Lynn. In answer to your follow-ups, well, you can see how the person (Phil) reacted and no, it did not backfire (Phil hasn't pulled any practical jokes on me since, lol). I could tell you several stories of pranks gone wrong (not my own, mind) but that would ruin the fun of what has been a laugh-inducing answer -- at least for me! Cheers! :)

Pulling pranks on someone has nothing to do with having a sense of humor, in fact most pranks wind up offending people, so I avoid them.

last time I pulled a prank was a couple of nights ago (the 4th of July). I was working, sitting there bored. I called my boss and told him that a firework had hit the building and it was on fire. The fire deparyment was on the way. He started freaking out. When he got to work he was pissed to find out there wasn't a fire but he laughed about it the next day.

A young man in our office is majorly scared of spiders. I placed a 2 inch rubber one on his keyboard before he came into work (he only had been with us a couple days, but I knew him personally from before). When he got there and pulled out his keyboard, he screamed, threw the spider across the room, left the office and went clear down the block (MAD), and didn't come back for a half hour. My bosses were mad at me. When he came back, he was quiet, face was red, and he looked ticked.

I hid a fellow employee's book in the microwave in the break room. When we went to break he couldn't find it and it was fun while he was looking. He took it good and had fun. I LOVE doing that kind of stuff! Or sneaking up on people and start talking to them in a loud voice. I think I have caused many ceilings to get dents. What FUN! LOL!
