The first thought that comes to mind is that a society might believe this because without prostitutes, men would take on mistresses or would just leave their wives, which would dissolve the family. I would imagine that in certain societies monogamy was not valued, so instead of the men just pulling up roots and finding new women, they could stay/live with one woman but have other women (who they hired) to have sex with. They would have no other obligation, except for the fee, to the prostitutes, and therefore they would be "free" to stay with one woman as a wife.

A mistress or girlfriend would make demands on a man's time and energy and affections, but a prostitute's demands are simple: just a payment for a service rendered. But a mistress or girlfriend making demands and wanting the man to leave his wife would create strife at home with the wife, which would cause the family to be unstable.

I'm not saying that I support any of these ideas, because I don't. I am just making conjectures based on the sentence you provided.

Scientists have found that men think of sex every 3 or 4 seconds, all day ever day. Women aren't the same way. Now, what if a man had a wife with whom he has a family and responsibilities, but on the side he has one or more women, prostitutes or mistresses? He's happy, and his wife is happy, and he meets his responsibilities as a father. France uses this: men have a wife and a mistress, and often the wife has a husband and a lover. The Muslims solved the problem by allowing the man to have four wives at one time; if one wife has a headache, he has three others to choose from.

I think Sandy has the best answer here. Keep in mind, a high percentage of married people have affairs.
Personally, I would have preferred my father hire someone, than have an affair. An affair is cheating on an emotional level, and that is much more painful.

Prostitution is not a taboo in Europe. This is not just a North American web site...
Quite frankly, I think we are quite hippo critical. Even though we are the land of freedom, we are more uptight about things over here.

I think it makes a certain amount of sense. Isn't it better to pay for sex now and then, rather than sneak around with the neighbor? That could end up disrupting two families, and causing a lot more trouble than making a trip or two down to the local bordello.

i am sure that prostitution has preserved some families...considering that there didn't used to be many job opportunities for women, and if their husband died, and they had kids to feed...who could blame them? but i have never heard of a society approving it.
