The KR were staunch Communists from the North of Cambodia and literally wanted to enthnic cleanse the non-communists. They believed that by either killing the elite and culturally literate and enslaving the rest, they could establish a new order.
Prior to the KR there were 10 million cambodians; afther their reign teher were 6 million - 2million killed and 2 million fled.

"The Khmer Rouge attempted to turn Cambodia into a classless society by depopulating cities and forcing the urban population into agricultural communes. The entire population was forced to become farmers in labour camps. During their four years in power, the Khmer Rouge overworked and starved the population, at the same time executing selected groups (including intellectuals) and killing many others for even minor breaches of rules."
That's the long and the short of it.

It is unbelievable what some societies do to each other, and continue to do today. There is no justification, only Evil incarnate, and Humanity still hasn't learned. Rwanda was only just over 10 years ago, and look what is happening in Sudan, and the world and powers that be are still dragging their feet.

They wanted to be in a total power situation and rule with the iron fist. This is not an uncommon thing with the oriental people.
I don't like what you did so you will be executed and your whole family too...
