I have a feeling they would look less favorably upon a person who can't follow directions than someone with a marginal GPA

Leaving it blank will make you seem worse than the GPA will. Just put it there honestly. There's a good chance nobody will even care. A blank space stands out more, and they're more likely to notice. They will ask themselves, what is this person hiding, and is this the kind of person who evades questions and/or carelessly omits information?

If it asks it, put it down. With as many applicants as there are for open positions, incomplete applications are the first to be tossed aside.

Anything lower than 2.0 should be omitted. A 2.9, though, is good.

No don't leave it blank because then that will make them wonder why. Then you will have to put the spotlight on it when you obviously don't want to. It will be fine.

2.9 is pretty decent. I would because the job people deserve to know your academic capabilities.

I wouldn't hide it. You can study and improve your scores and you can let them know that you are a hard worker and are willing to push yourself.
