Some of us do. I have played since I was four, love the sport, can name all 7 FIFA World Cup Champions, enjoy talking tactics with coaches, etc. However, I would say that I am an extreme minority. Very few others follow it as closely as I do (I have taped every match of this World Cup). In general, Americans DONT know a lot about soccer. It is ignorant of people to think that all Americans dont know much about "football"(soccer), but then again, it is ignorant that "Americans" call themselves Americans, because in fact the Americas consit of many countries, from Canada to Argentina. So, I say that until our country learns to treat others with respect, other countries, while I hope they will respect us, shouldnt be expected to.

I'm sure there's a lot of americans who know a lot about soccer. It's just like Canada. It's not as popular a sport as hockey or baseball but the fans who follow soccer seem to know their stuff. It's not a secret that america isn't the most popular country in the world right now so even if your team was amazing, they'd still pick on you. I think peoples feathers get ruffled when they see a country like america who isn't known for their soccer, make it to a WC. They want to make americans look stupid but you can't let that get to you. I'm sure you know tons about soccer so don't let anyone tell you different. Stick up for yourself and prove them wrong!

Watch the boards here for the number of U.S. Americans who answer football questions with pointless and often insulting tidbits like "I'm American. Soccer is stupid." It gets tiring.
One of the big differences between the U.S. and most everywhere else is the *percentage* of people who like/watch/appreciate/play football. On Wednesday I asked the group I was working with -- one boy, two girls and another woman -- if anyone liked football. *Everyone* did and we spent the rest of lunch debating WC games and talking about the teams. Hard to do that in the U.S.
But mostly it's the idiot U.S. Americans who post stupid things and pretend they're representing all of the U.S. who give the rest of us a bad reputation. And some dim bulbs from the rest of the world believe them.

You can't generalize. It's different strokes for different folks. I absolutely LOVE football (or as you refer to it, soccer), but many Americans are clueless as to the beauty of the game and calling it "boring" only proves that to be true, as I find soccer to be one of the most exciting, fast-paced sports there is. Unfortunately, Americans tend to be goal-oriented, in how they look at life and sports and think that any game that has so few goals is boring, but every movement and motion of soccer is like a skilled dance and I adore watching it. So, some of us get it and others don't. The difference being that it is not looked upon as a National sport here as it is in most other countries. That is unfortunate.

I very well could be wrong, but I was lead to believe that football, or "soccer", was one of the biggest participant sports in the US. I heard that there were something like 16 million registered soccer players in the states, but it was typically a young persons sport?
I wouldn't worry about it though. Europeans know sod all about Baseball and American Football. But that poses another question. Do they want to? ;)

Americans like when their kids play soccer, yet they have a tendency to not care about the sport itself. They seem to find it boring.

Here is an article written by an American journalist about the American view on soccer. This article did not bother me (I am Canadian) but it really upset a lot of Americans on the Adidas site.
