The humble Rhyme was used as a seemingly innocent vehicle to quickly spread subversive messages!

The Rhyme allowed an element of free speech!

A rhyme associates words with similar sounds using a rhyming couplet or short verse. A rhyme is often short and easy to remember and this was a critical element when many people were unable to read or write and a rhyme was verbally passed from generation to generation.

It was a vital element when commoners wanted to comment on the events of the day! It must be remembered that direct criticism or dissent would often have been punishable by death!

We need to understand the people, history and cultures of by-gone days to unlock the hidden meanings of the humble Nursery rhyme

maybe it was relating to a good gossip regaurding other people and what happened to each of them for the outcome in a discreetly put rhyme so they would not get caught speaking of......possibly someone took the roast beef and went wee wee wee home bitching???? this site may help that i found though good luck hope i may have helped

If it is edible, pigs will eat it. Years ago, before they came up with fancy food for pigs, they were "slopped" with the garbage that was left over from the daily meals. If there was beef scraps in it, I suppose they ate it, so I guess pigs do eat beef.

Well it would be in bad taste, lol.....to say that he ate pork, don't you think. Rather cannibalistic, and that would be morbid for children. And well we don't want them to think that he had lamb, they might put two and two together and think that he was eating Mary's little lamb. So the obvious choice would be the Roast Beef. It is good you know! I just want to know if he had Yorkshire Pudding with it?

Probably the pig loves Arby's with horsy sauce! LOL
little note....when I was a child my Mom would trim my toenails on Saturday night before going to church the next morning...she always said that rhyme to me as she touched each toe....and she wiggled each one as she said the words....I was like you....."the pig ate roast beef? " ......I felt sorry for the one pig....(toe) that had to remain at home.....nothing for that one.....OINK

I don't know the deeper meaning, but on a surface level, yes pigs will eat anything. They will eat their own young if hungry enough. You can feed them human remains or vegetable remains, it doesn't matter, they're omnivores.
